On-device voices keep your text private. Online voices send it to the voice provider, often for higher quality.
About this tool
This reads text aloud using the voices already built into your browser and operating system, through the Web Speech API. Pick a voice, set the speed and pitch, and press Speak. Most voices run entirely on your device, so your text stays private; a few (marked "online") are provided over the network by the voice vendor.
The selection of voices, accents and quality comes from your system, not from us, so it differs between browsers and devices. It is a general reader: for an unfamiliar word it gives a good guess, but synthetic voices can get unusual names and technical jargon wrong, so do not treat it as a definitive guide to pronunciation.
